Farming, Gardening Housebuilding for ages 9 and 10

At the age of nine there is a change in the soul life of children. They are beginning to feel no longer a part of the all-embracing world of nature. They are taking a step towards independence and looking at the world more objectively. At the same time this gives them a feeling of isolation. They have a different relationship with people in their environment and may even criticize or judge them in some measure. This attitude is a prelude to puberty when the symptoms appear much more strongly. It is noticeable, too, that both in speech and movement, children are becoming more conscious.

In the Rudolf Steiner schools the needs are met by introducing grammar and gymnastics, by telling stories of a particular type, and by making studies dealing with the practical side of life. . . . Learning about practical activities meets the demand of the children's nature to know more of their surroundings. They are really seeking the answer to the question as to their own place in the world. . . . The other aspect of this teaching is to give children a comprehensive understanding of the world and to develop their human powers, their moral and social qualities.
